Night coming on, we could not wait to make something as to their fate. For one, why had none of the bodies been washed ashore? The situation became more perilous as only days before what should have been the end of the three men’s shift, bad weather came to the islands.
He built a chapel on the island and for centuries shepherds used to bring over sheep to the island to graze but would never stay the night, fearful of the spirits believed to haunt that remote spot.
Further clues were found down by the landing platform. Log entries on the 13th December stated that the storm was still raging, and that all three men had been praying.

It was theorized that two keepers went to the landing to try and save the ropes and buoys during a storm.
On the 26th December 1900, a small ship was making its way to the Flannan Islands in the remote Outer Hebrides. Time to solve a 115-year-old mystery?
That is, except for the lighthouse log. The captain had a schedule to keep and sent James Moore up to the lighthouse to get everyone to help unload the boat. Before turning to the hypotheses on what may have caused the disappearance of the three men, some of the facts discovered in the search for the lighthouse keepers should be noted. Murder - did one of the men kill the others and commit suicide or leave the island?
Moore became increasingly worried about his fellow keepers and, returning with help, he searched the lighthouse from top to bottom. In the approximate centre of the island it forked by means of a set of hand-operated points called "Clapham Junction" named after the railway junction in central London; one branch continued in its curvature to head eastwards to the east landing place, on the south-east corner of the island, forming a half-circle, while the other, slightly shorter, branch curved back to the west to serve the west landing, situated in a small inlet on the island's south coast.
Storm still raging.
There was always an undeniable pull exerted from these shores, something tugging at the strings of consciousness.
Even before the modern mystery which would make them famous, the Flannan Islands have long been surrounded by spooky local legends and lore. What is also mysterious is that William McArthur was an experienced mariner and lighthouse man, and was known on the mainland as a tough sort.
This is a very dangerous thing we're talking about here. (from left to right) Thomas Marshall, Donald MacArthur and James Ducat - December 8, 1900. Scores of theories and books have been presented over the years on this mystery, yet nothing has come to light to even begin to explain what happened — that is, until now.

However, whether they were swept away by a storm-induced wave or taken by mysterious fairy folk that good old St. Flannan saw, it doesn’t soften the fact that three men were lost. Located around 65 miles off of Scotland’s cold, wind battered northwestern coast are a group of secluded tiny islands known as the Flannan Islands, also know in Scottish Gaelic as Na h-Eileanan Flannach, and also called “The Seven Hunters.” Part of the Outer Hebrides island chain, the Flannan Islands take their name from the 7th century Irish preacher, and later saint, St. Flannan, who once inhabited the island called Eilean Mor, meaning “Big Isle,” along with his followers of the then ubiquitous Celtic church and built a chapel here.
Captain James Harvey was sent to Eilean Mor to provide some much-needed supplies along with a new worker to swap out one of the keepers. All three men were seasoned veterans of the storms; Ducat, 43, had over 20 years experience at lighthouse keeping, while Marshall and McArthur were both seamen. The keepers worked on a rotating watch of 14 days; food and supplies were brought to them as weather permitted. In 1907, a mysterious tomb was discovered in Egypt.
The captain headed to the nearest telegraph station, on the Isle of Lewis, and there he sent a message to his employer, the Secretary of the Northern Lighthouse Board in Edinburgh: “A dreadful accident has happened at Flannans...”. Others die but are reborn.
Inside he found that no fire was lit to ward off the damp coldness, the beds were unused, and the clocks had stopped. Whole books have been written about The Eilean Mor Lighthouse Mystery, where three lighthouse keepers simply vanished in mid-December of the year 1900. On arrival, the crew and relief keeper found that the flagstaff had no flag, all of the usual provision boxes had been left on the landing stage for re-stocking, and more ominously, none of the lighthouse keepers were there to welcome them ashore. The lighthouse lamp itself was found to be in perfect working order, yet sat unlit and unused. This means that a wave swept away one of the two members trying to save the box. Joseph Moore then rowed ashore and ascended up the steep set of stairs that led up to the lighthouse. Due to more pressing matters, the CLS had failed to pass the information on to the Northern Lighthouse Board. Moore made it up with no problems and opened the unlocked lighthouse door and immediately knew something was wrong. Even before they arrived it was apparent that something was decidedly amiss. Da-da would love to tell you that this mystery is solved, but… well, Da-da may have just made matters worse. SPECIAL NOTE: We are not medical doctors. The Commissioners appointed Roderick MacKenzie, Gamekeeper, Uig, near Meavaig, to look out daily for signals that might be shown from the Rock, and to note each night whether the light was seen or not seen. Since the automation of the lighthouse in 1971, the Flannan Isles have been without permanent residents. In the meantime, Captain Harvey sent a telegram to the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters, in Edinburgh, which read: A dreadful accident has happened at Flannans. The Brahan Seer, or Coinneach Odhar, was gifted with “the sight” – an ability to see visions that came unbidden day or night. Construction, between 1895 and 1899, was undertaken by George Lawson of Rutherglen at a cost of £1,899 inclusive of the building of the landing places, stairs and railway tracks. The film was directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, best known for the Scandinavian drama, The Killing. Once at the lighthouse, Moore noticed something was immediately wrong; the door to the lighthouse was unlocked and in the entrance hall two of the three oil skinned coats were missing.
The path to the lighthouse is not easy to navigate, so this could account for some of the captain’s apprehension. Sea calm. No other signs of the missing men were ever found. The Eilean Mor Lighthouse Mystery. Why had three experienced lighthouse keepers been taken unaware by a wave? Some villages vanish and never return.
